5 questions to ask yourself before buying your oven
The oven is one of the key elements of a functional and well-equipped kitchen: there are today a multitude of models, from the most basic to the most complete. However, not all of them offer the same performance, so you have to ask yourself some questions before embarking on your first purchase. Cooking methods, cleaning systems, advanced functions… Clara Pereira, interior designer for Siematic luxury kitchens, explains to us what parameters to take into account when choosing the oven that best suits our kitchen and our life.
What type of oven for my kitchen?
Today there are three main categories of ovens: built-in models, traditional countertop ovens and cooking pianos. In addition to the budget, the choice of the type of oven depends above all on the space available ... The built-in oven nestles in a suitable kitchen unit: it is therefore characterized by a standard size, even if its interior bedding differs according to brands. Before accommodating a built-in oven, it is advisable to check the size of the cavity allowing to accommodate the device: the latter must measure 60 x 60 cm for conventional ovens, and 38 or 45 x 60 cm for compact models. If you don't usually cook several dishes at the same time, and if you cook occasionally, opt for a compact model, more than enough. Cooking pianos are the largest devices - around 90 cm wide - and only suitable for sufficiently spacious kitchens. Finally, if the configuration of your kitchen prompts you to choose a table oven, know that there are many models combined with a microwave, which allow a significant saving of space.
Should we favor gas or electricity?
Here, the choice is made above all according to your installation, since your accommodation must imperatively be connected to city gas if you choose an oven or a gas cooking piano. On the performance side, I recommend electric ovens, which offer very good value for money compared to conventional gas ovens. These do not always allow you to properly control the heat and cooking of your food. If you still want to favor gas, turn to cooking pianos: they offer unrivaled performance - all models combined - to simmer good meals.
I choose which cooking method?
Electric ovens offer two modes of cooking: natural convection, easy to use and ideal for traditional recipes (meats, fish, pizzas, desserts, etc.) and hot air, much more complete. In addition to the two resistors placed at each end, the fan-assisted ovens are equipped with a fan which allows the heat to circulate around the dish to obtain a more homogeneous cooking. They now represent the majority of sales of electric ovens.
What is the difference between pyrolysis and catalysis cleaning?
The ovens with the "catalysis" system are cleaned automatically during cooking (as soon as they reach a temperature of 200 ° C) thanks to their porous walls ... but this self-degreasing system is not always very effective! Cooking enthusiasts therefore prefer cleaning by pyrolysis, which involves increasing the oven temperature to 500 ° C to burn all the grease and food residues present inside. Once the cycle is finished, all you have to do is pick them up with a sponge so that your oven will be impeccable again!
What are the different doors available?
If the oven is at height, I really recommend the option of the door with lateral opening, even retractable (like the Slide and Hide at Neff) much more practical. Prefer the classic opening with a drop-down door if your oven is placed in a low cabinet, without forgetting to add the "cold door" option, especially if you have young children at home. Thanks to a quadruple glazing, the heat of the oven door will never exceed 60 ° C during cooking, thus avoiding many contact burns.
